JULIA KIM KANE

Julia Kim Kane was born in South Korea, immigrating to the US at the age of eight. Her father, a political refugee, sacrificed much to find freedom and new opportunities for his children. Art was not a pastime consistent with the path of the American Dream.

Shaped by weighty expectations, Kane became a lawyer, her creativity limited by facts, precedent and spellcheck. She felt unfulfilled in her work despite career success.

“Looking for a hobby after retirement, an art class transformed my very essence. It awakened a long dormant undiscovered passion for making art.” Through art, Kane looks at life and the world with the lens of new possibilities.  “Creating art gives me a deep satisfaction. Down to my toes. With complete
certainty, I know this is what I should be doing. Painting is the only pursuit where I’ve had that sense of something being completely mine from start to end. That’s why this journey feels so right, so personal.”

Kane’s work is exuberant, using large formats of bold and bright colors and textures to inject fun, hope, beauty, maybe joy.
“My hope is that in my art, viewers see me, my playfulness and sense of humor, my attempts to be brave, and to share my sense of beauty. Perhaps my journey will inspire others to find their own passions, no matter how late, unconventional or difficult they may be.
